Large Group Family Vacations

How to Plan an Easy Large Group Vacation

Get the Whole Gang Together Stress-Free

Travel planning takes lots of coordination and flexibility—especially when your group spans multiple generations. With our advice, everyone from your kids to grandma to your second cousin once-removed can experience a stress-free Ocean City vacation.

Plan your itinerary together—and write it all down

It’s bound to happen in large groups, especially with lots of kids, teens and tweens in the mix. Some will want to ride go-carts or hit the waterslide while others want to play mini-golf or do some shopping. (Adults can have their own preferences, too!)

Taking the time to create an itinerary together early in your stay will help to ensure that all involved get a chance to do something they want. Sure, there will be compromises, but all parties will be well-aware beforehand. And knowing their activity is part of the plan should make younger family members more willing participants.

Plan outings suited for large groups

Assateague Island National Park

It just takes a little digging to find destinations that will interest (almost) every family member. Surely there is something that’s new and surprising to everyone at Ocean City’s Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum. Tanger Outlets has enough stores and restaurants to appease double-digit families. And the horses of Assateague Island National Park are sure to captivate your whole crew. Wherever you go, remember to allow some extra time. Getting large groups ready and out the door can be a challenge.

Go your own way

When vacationing with extended family members or multiple families, you may feel pressured to do everything as one large group, from morning to night. But some separation can make vacation memories sweeter. Make sure everyone understands at the beginning of the trip that it’s perfectly acceptable to break off into smaller groups for activities and meals. If you and another family have children, consider taking turns doing things with all the kids and giving the other grownups some alone time. You’ll all end up at the same place at the end of the day, and you’ll definitely have plenty of time to spend together.

Expect the unexpected—and roll with it

All the planning in the world can’t account for bad weather, a closed attraction or a kid with a cold. Being flexible, especially with the youngest and oldest members of the group, will ease tension on your vacation. Adapting to changing situations will also help the family stay in the present moment, rather than lamenting what may have been missed or rushing toward the next thing. Going back to the itinerary idea, you may want to prepare a special list of things to do on rainy days or extremely hot days.

Choose a property with amenities that make life easier

Living room of St. Kitts 403

When vacationing with a large group, opting for space is one of the smartest things you can do. Make sure there are enough bedrooms, extra bathrooms, a comfortable living space where everyone can sit—or even multiple living spaces—and a designated area for kids to play by themselves.

Don’t underestimate the conveniences of home, either. Especially for an extended stay, having a fully-equipped kitchen, a washer/dryer, central air conditioning, Wi-Fi access and TVs will ensure everyone has their own space and comforts—and a stress-free time.

Determine a budget that works for the whole family

Before the trip planning process even begins, you need to talk budget. Vacationing in volume means some family members might be able to open their wallets wider than others. Determining—at least roughly—the amount you’ll spend when embarking on activities together will alleviate the stress of feeling pressured or having to make big choices in the middle of your getaway.

Share meal responsibilities

With a fully stocked kitchen, you may not want to eat out for every meal. To avoid breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner prep falling on one family member, plan to share the cooking. You can divide by days or particular types of meal. Having everyone chip in for pizza or crabs is always a winner.

Ask older kids to babysit

Evening out with friends

Just because you’re on a family vacation doesn’t mean you can’t have an evening away. If the kids in your group are a variety of ages, have the teenagers babysit! In addition to allowing you a nice, quiet adult meal, the kids—perhaps cousins who don’t see each other often—can make a night of it, too, with popcorn and a movie.

Benefits of the Off-Season in Ocean City, MD

Everyone knows how great Ocean City is during the summer months, but not many realize how fun it can also be during the off-season. The weather may be a bit chilly, but there is still plenty to do, such as weekly events, shopping, and tourist attractions. It’s a little bit like having the beach to yourself, with less traffic, fewer crowds, and an all-around slower pace.  Head down to the Boardwalk for a morning bike ride and stop in at your favorite breakfast shop for a cup of coffee.  Most Boardwalk shops and restaurants are open daily, and especially on weekends.  There are no restrictions for bike riding on the Boardwalk from the Tuesday after Labor Day until the Friday before Memorial Day (excluding Springfest and Sunfest weekends).  Parking is also free April 1st through October 31st.  Feel free to bring your pets along, as leashed dogs are welcome on the beach and Boardwalk from October 1st through April 30th.  (Browse our Pet-Friendly Rentals page to view homes that permit pets.)

Fantastic Dining, Shopping and Activities

Snow and sand do not mix, but there is just something about seeing Ocean City in all seasons of the year that is so peaceful and wonderful to experience. Beachcombers love the off-season since it’s the perfect time to search for seashells as they wash up onto the shore (especially after storms in the spring or fall).  It is also not unusual to see rare marine life make an appearance every now and then, such as migrating seals that stop to rest on the beach.  If retail therapy is what you seek, Ocean City offers a variety of great shopping options – from small shops like Ish Boutique and South Moon Under to The Tanger Outlets in West Ocean City, which features discount shopping at big name stores like American Eagle, Under Armour, and more.  Ready for a bite to eat?  There are many town favorite restaurants that offer daily lunch and dinner specials, such as OC Wasabi, Harrison’s Harbor Watch, and Harborside.  Be sure to check out Fishtales next to Bahia Marina on 18th St., which is open on weekends and features a beautiful bayfront beach with a playground for the kids.  Off-season fishing trips are also available there on the weekends. Reel in winner rock fish and enjoy your own freshly caught meal.

Budget-Friendly Vacation Rental Rates

Last, but not least, the best part about the off-season is low rental rates! Our best properties are waiting to offer you luxurious accommodations for a fraction of what it would cost in the summertime.  Here are some recommendations for awesome off-season getaways.

Acropolis 1 – 3-BR/3.5-BA/Sleeps 8 – Stay oceanfront on 63rd Street in one of Ocean City’s finest buildings.  Previously featured in Coastal Style Magazine as a “Prestigious Property,” this 3,000-square foot condo offers opulent décor, access to a rooftop hot tub, and beautiful views of the ocean and beach.

Sunset Island 6 Hidden Cove Way 2E – 3-BR/2-BA/Sleeps 8 – Escape to this quaint bayfront island off of 67th Street.  Located along the water, this upscale condo features peaceful bay views and access to first-class amenities including indoor/outdoor pools, a community clubhouse, private bayfront beaches, and more.

Belmont Towers 710 – 3-BR/2.5-BA/Sleeps 9 – Relax on your balcony while enjoying cool breezes and fantastic views of the ocean, inlet, and Assateague Island in the distance.  This spacious condo is situated on the south side of the popular Belmont Towers building located downtown on the Ocean City Boardwalk.

Beach Getaway – 4-BR/3-BA/Sleeps 10 – Bring your canine kids along to this spacious pet-friendly home located on the bayside of Coastal Highway on 86th Street.  Guests will enjoy all of the upscale finishes at this property, as well as a backyard deck, fire pit, grill, and private fenced-in yard.

Don’t wait – plan your off-season Ocean City escape today.  Browse VantageOceanCity.com or give us a call at (410) 723-2002 to let our Vacation Coordinators help you find the perfect vacation spot.

Protect Your Vacation Dollars with Travel Insurance

Protect Your Vacation with Travel Insurance

Protect Your Vacation Dollars

by Kirsten Brink, Regional Manager of Vantage Vacation Rentals

When it comes to traveling, it is best to expect the unexpected. In my experience as a Rental Agent, unexpected bumps in the road are inevitable. Most vacationers invest a lot of time and resources into picking out the perfect rental for their vacation, but they often overlook the importance of protecting that investment should an unfortunate event occur. The truth is that when you are traveling or planning to travel, you never know what is going to happen. Travel insurance can provide a cushion of comfort in terms of monetary compensation should an unforeseen circumstance arise.

So, What Exactly is Travel Insurance?

Most vacationers think that travel insurance is an extra fee paid which only covers reimbursement of vacation expenses should a major weather event occur. This is actually not true. While travel insurance does protect vacation expenses in the case of an unexpected weather event, it also provides reimbursement for unused, pre-paid non-refundable trip costs in the case of a trip cancellation for a variety of covered reasons. A typical vacation rental contract provides certain provisions for cancellation clauses and an outline of reimbursement. For example, if a guest cancels but then the property proceeds to be re-booked at the same rate by another guest, the guest that cancelled would be reimbursed the amount they paid less a cancellation fee. There is no guarantee that the property will be re-booked and if cancellation occurs at a date close to the planned arrival date, the chance of re-booking reduces even further. Travel insurance provides a level of comfort in offering the potential for reimbursement even if the vacation is cancelled at the last minute.

Additional Benefits of Travel Insurance

One of the best parts about travel insurance coverage is that it continues to protect travelers well into the vacation, meaning that it not only covers if a trip is cancelled prior to arrival, but it also protects travelers if a trip is interrupted. If an emergency arises and vacationers must cut their vacation short, travel insurance ensures that they will be reimbursed for losses at a rate of up to 150% of the insured trip cost to include additional expenses of returning home earlier than planned. Anyone that has ever had to leave a trip or event early due to an injured or sick child or other family member will understand the full value that this coverage has.

In addition to trip cancellation and interruption protection, should an injury or illness occur while on vacation, travel insurance provides for emergency assistance and transportation as well as financial recovery of medical expenses. Additionally, travel insurance includes coverage for travel delay, identity theft resolution services, legal expenses, personal liability, accidental death and other benefits. For full details regarding travel insurance coverage, please visit www.CSATravelProtection.com/plan-details.

Travel Smarter, Not Harder

Travel Smarter, Not Harder in OCMD

Travel Smarter, Not Harder

If you’ve ever driven to Ocean City in summer on a Saturday, you know that traffic is a given. Over 8 million visitors a year flock to the area in search of beach bliss, transforming the normally quiet town of only 7,100 year-round residents into a vibrant resort. Yet, the fact remains that Ocean City is only 4.5 square miles in size and a skinny 10 miles in length, with just three ways on and off the island. If you’re traveling during peak days or peak hours, you will likely find yourself crawling along like a group of slow-motion sea turtles. Not exactly the most peaceful way to start (or end) your vacation!

Think Like a Local – Beat the Peak

What’s a determined beach-goer to do? All you’re trying to do is enjoy your vacation, right? As many locals & long-time visitors know, the key to avoiding traffic is arriving and departing during off-peak times. That’s why select homes in Vantage’s inventory offer Sunday-Sunday and Friday-Friday rentals, which allow guests to arrive and depart on days of the week that typically have a lower traffic volume. That means while all the other visitors are battling the masses on a Saturday afternoon, you can be relaxing in your beach chair, eating french fries on the Boardwalk, or crabbing and fishing on the bay. See below for some of our favorite properties that offer great alternatives to the traditional Saturday rental:
