46th Annual White Marlin Open August 5 – 9, 2019

The first full week of every August brings thousands of eager deep-sea anglers to Ocean City, Maryland, for their shot at a trophy fish and massive winnings. Join us this year for the 46th Annual White Marlin Open, taking place August 5–9. Whether you’re competing for the big prize money or cheering on those who do, make your home base with a Vantage rental property and stay close to all the excitement.

Lots on the line

Big money has always been a hallmark of the Open.

The White Marlin Open is a whopper. The 2015, 2016 and 2017 tournaments combined drew nearly 1,000 boats and more than 7,550 contestants. The prize money totaled $12.9 million. Big money has always been a hallmark of the Open. It was the first tournament ever to award over $1 million for catching a fish—which then happened in consecutive years. Another first occurred in 2015, when the White Marlin Open featured two million-dollar winners, a feat that was repeated in 2017.

Who participates, and how?

Contestants may fish any three of the four days.

Anglers pay $1,000 to register a boat, and anyone on the boat can fish in the tournament—there’s no limit.

But that’s just the beginning. Added entry levels allow anglers to take part in other competitions with fees ranging from $300 to $10,000. Some of these levels still involve billfish, while others include catches of wahoo, tuna and dolphin.

Contestants may fish any three of the four days. You’ll find a mix of men, women and children casting lines to hook the big one. Beginners are certainly welcome—and recent history shows they have fared very well. In fact, almost half of the past winners had limited experience with deep-sea fishing. Some have won on their first ever billfish catch.

Fans are hooked

Witness the official and suspenseful weigh-ins.

It’s uncommon for a fishing tournament to draw big crowds of rabid fans. Then again, there’s nothing common about the White Marlin Open. For years, families have scheduled their vacations around Tournament Week, which is consistently one of the busiest weeks of the year in Ocean City, Maryland.

Early each morning, you’ll find thousands of spectators in the inlet cheering all the boats, waving and wishing them luck in their quest for prize gamefish. In the afternoon, even more head over to Harbour Island on 14th Street and the Bay to witness the official—and suspenseful—weigh-ins. Watch intensely as judges tally the nervous anglers’ fates and fortunes by the pound.

Book a home with allure

You could spend hours fishing for the right place to stay for the White Marlin Open. Or, you could go right to Vantage and find a keeper in minutes. Our reservation specialists will help you choose a rental home close to the tournament action with plenty of room for captain and crew.

Show your Irish pride (no matter where you’re from) and get your fix of green floats, shamrocks and outfits at the 40th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival. Even the dogs who attend wear green! Be one of the thousands of people who line up along Coastal Highway to watch 100 entries from three states strut their stuff.

This is the place to be to enjoy traditional Irish marching bands and music, cheer for the most spirited floats and catch a glimpse of local Ocean City, MD, celebrities. See who the judges loved after the parade, where awards will be given out for Best Marching Band, Best Motorized Unit, Best Commercial Float and other categories.

The parade is just the beginning. The festival continues throughout the day with live music, dancing, Irish-inspired food and drinks. Treat your family to face painting and games; treat yourself to a raffle and a pint of Guinness.

St. Patrick’s Day Boardwalk 5K | Saturday, March 16 – 9:00 a.m.

St. Patrick's Day mascot

An Ocean City, MD, tradition returns with the 2019 St. Patrick’s Day Boardwalk 5K. Runners of all skill levels will start on the boardwalk, take a scenic route toward the inlet and down around the pier. Since it wouldn’t quite be a St. Patrick’s Day race without an Irish pub to mark the finish line, racers wind up at Shenanigan’s Irish Pub & Grille with a free Guinness drink ticket – and possibly an awards ribbon – in hand.

Prefer to relax instead of run? The post-race shindig at Shenanigans is part of their weekend fondly known as Paddy Bash. Savor all the corned beef and cabbage you could want, along with festive drink specials and music by James Gallagher & Off the Boat, plus featured guest bands.

Pubs and grub

There are plenty of Irish pubs, bars and restaurants in Ocean City getting in on the St. Patrick’s Day action.

HarBAR crawl begins after Saturday’s parade at 2:00 p.m. and has a shuttle running between locations for maximum party efficiency. You’ll hit Ocean City hotspots like Mad Fish Bar & Grill, Micky Fins Bar & Grill, Crab Alley and Harborside Bar & Grill, all featuring DJs, live music games and more. Planning on visiting all four locations? There’s a special prize just for you! When you’re finally ready to head home, you can get a $5 Uber voucher.

Other locals’ favorites with big St. Patrick’s Day weekend party plans, live entertainment and specials include Seacrets, Pickles Pub, Harpoon Hanna’s, Cowboy Coast, Skye Bar and Dry Dock.

Here’s one to add to your itinerary: There’s a brand-new Irish establishment opening its doors for the first time on Friday, March 15. It’s Wicomico Street’s newest party bar, The Lucky Anchor. Be there for the official grand opening party on Saturday after the St. Patrick’s Day with the legendary DJ Batman.

Beach Wedding Ocean City

Plan a Magical Beach Wedding in Ocean City, MD

Beach Wedding Couple Ocean City
Ocean City, MD, is a romantic place to tie the knot

The sound of the waves, the sun on the horizon, the smell of the salt and feeling of the sand—there are few locales more romantic and appropriate for a wedding than the beach. And Ocean City, MD, makes for a perfect destination wedding for you, your family and your closest friends.

Here are the top tips to plan a beach wedding to remember in Ocean City, Maryland.

Plan well in advance

Every ceremony requires plenty of prep, and that’s especially true for a destination wedding in a popular location like Ocean City, MD. Couples from all over the East Coast flock to Ocean City to tie the knot.

The first thing you’ll need to consider when planning your Ocean City wedding is the timing: Are there any special events, which could draw big crowds and interfere with your plans?

Planning a Beach Wedding
Start by contacting the Town of Ocean City

Then you’ll want to apply for a local marriage license. Contact Worchester County Clerk of Court Office at 410-632-5500 to make sure you know what documents you’ll need to bring. You should discuss your plans with the Ocean City Mayor’s Office (410-289-8931).

Be sure you also have an officiant ready to go: Ocean City, MD, has no Justice of the Peace to oversee your ceremony. Once you have all of your plans set, you must also notify the city.

You may also want to attend the annual Ocean City Bridal Show (held at Seacrets!) to meet with local vendors and professionals who can help you navigate the process of planning a beach wedding. This year’s event will be April 7, 2019 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Decide on a location—public, private or resort-style

Beach Wedding Venue Ocean City
Beach Wedding Venue Ocean City

Once you have the red tape out of the way, your first big question is where are you going to hold your ceremony and reception? A public beach might be the most affordable option, but that means anyone can crash your wedding photos. You might be able to reserve sections for yourself, however, so check with the Ocean City Mayor’s Office.

A private beach offers a perfect amount of seclusion, and a restaurant or hotel right near or even on the beach can provide views of the ocean plus a reception venue—but at a higher cost than if you say, “I do” on a public beach.

Enjoy the sunrise (or sunset)

During peak season, it’s going to be hot in the afternoon, so consider a morning or sunset ceremony for a cooler alternative. Your guests—especially the older and younger ones—will be thankful. Your photos will likely come out better, too, as everyone will be glistening less.

Besides, nothing’s more romantic than the sun rising or setting as you enjoy your first kiss as a newlywed couple.

Choose appropriate attire

You want to be comfortable when you’re strolling down the sandy aisle, so opt for lightweight fabric and leave behind the cumbersome (and hot) ball gown. Likewise, the groom and members of the wedding party should don lighter than usual colors and material—linen and cotton make for good options. Groomsmen could even opt out of sport jackets for a more casual look that matches the locale—so no black tuxes.

It could also get windy, so consider leaving behind the lengthy veil. And avoid heels so you don’t sink into the sand: Instead, wear flat sandals or wedges—or go barefoot to feel the sand between your toes for the full beach wedding experience.

Make waves with a sound system

You’re going to spend hours perfecting your vows and the rest of the ceremony, so make sure all of your guests can hear them. The waves of Ocean City, MD, will be loud, and you don’t want them to drown out your proclamations of love. Look into renting a sound system to amplify your pronouncements—especially if you’re filming the proceedings.

Mind your meals

From the hors d’oeuvres to mains and dessert, you’re going to want to put some thought into what you serve at your reception. Outdoor dining on the water demands lighter foods, and you’ll want to keep all cheeses and cream-based items out of the sun. Make sure you serve plenty of water in addition to the champagne so your guests stay hydrated, and choose bubbly wines that will feel refreshing.

Finally, the cake—no wedding is complete without it. Consult with your baker about what fillings and other ingredients will work best under the sun—often, fondant is a better choice than buttercream, and red velvet will do well.

Make sure your flowers can handle the heat

Not all blooms are meant for the high heat and humidity of Ocean City, Maryland, during the summer. When you’re planning your dream beach wedding, you’ll want to keep in mind what’s in the bridal bouquet and what varieties the flower girl will be traipsing down the aisle with. Select ones that do well in tropical weather: orchids, chrysanthemums, plumeria, calla lilies and king protea are all good choices.

Start planning today

Now that you’re ready to plan your beach wedding in Ocean City, Maryland, contact a friendly Vantage reservation specialist today at (410) 723-2002 to book accommodations for you and all of your guests. Or browse and book direct at www.VantageOceanCity.com.

Vacation Rental Forecast for 2019: Ocean City, Maryland

Vacation Rental Outlook 2019: 6 Predictions from Experts

The New Year is almost here, and with it comes our vacation rental forecast for 2019. What are guests looking for in a vacation home? What’s hot in condo rentals and beach rentals? What tactics should property owners try for the greatest return on their investment? Here are six top trends and predictions for owners to watch in the Ocean City, Maryland, 2019 vacation rental market.

1. Bigger (and bigger-feeling) homes

More and more, people booking a vacation rental want room to move—to gather for holiday or milestone celebrations, to give adults and children their own separate space and more. This is playing out for the in a trend toward larger rental homes, especially as multigenerational travel becomes more popular.

For extended family groups, a larger vacation rental property makes sense, according to Forbes writer Christopher Elliott, who extolled the virtues of a California wine country estate that sleeps 10. Such a property might feature outdoor living areas for drinks and conversation, outdoor kitchen areas for group cooking, a pool, onsite spa and more.

Fortunately, you don’t have to own a palace to give guests room to spread out and feel comfortable. With beach rentals, condo rentals and beyond, you can create multiple sitting areas in the space you have. For Ocean City, Maryland, vacation homes, consider marketing such areas as:

  • A game room for those rainy days when the kids can’t go to the beach
  • A crafts station for making art and jewelry out of collected shells
  • A quiet space for napping children (and adults!)
  • A patio for enjoying a crab feast
  • A porch for ice cream socials and wine tastings

If you’re considering making renovations to your property, think about opening up kitchens and dining rooms for more expansive gathering areas.

2. The Millennial traveler

In addition to large, multifamily gatherings, be on the lookout for young singles and couples seeking accommodations for events, sightseeing or just getting away from it all.

Millennials (think later 20s, early 30s) are proving to be avid travelers. Many have stayed at condos and beach houses with their families growing up. They’re comfortable both branching out from hotels for vacation lodging and finding and booking these stays online. So they’re familiar with vacation homes and ready to create some new experiences on their own.

How can property owners adapt to this trend in the vacation rentals market? Offer short term rentals that accommodate entry-level budgets and fewer vacation days. To accommodate large groups of friends on vacation, consider offering multiple properties in the same complex. And treat these younger travelers to the amenities they crave. Beyond the must-have of lightning-fast Wi-Fi, with ample bandwidth for YouTube and streaming content, consider:

  • Spaces ideal for socializing
  • Online/mobile services for booking, billing and beyond
  • Access to bike, scooter and car sharing stations and services

Be sure to mention local venues in your descriptions. If a Millennial traveler remembers a specific boardwalk, beach or crab shack from a childhood vacation in Ocean City, Maryland, you’re likely to jog a fond memory—and possibly inspire a booking.

3. Local outdoor and dining attractions

Along with Argentina, Italy and Egypt’s Nile Valley, Lonely Planet listed two nature sites in the Eastern United States—Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains and the Catskills— among its top destinations for 2019.

This trend is good news for the Ocean City, MD, vacation rental market as well. Travelers looking for adventure will find themselves just a short drive away from:

  • The famous ponies of Assateague Island and National Seashore
  • The boating and camping of Pocomoke River State Park
  • Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, recently named “One of the 10 Best Amazing Places for Wildlife” by USA Today

After a busy day of exploring, vacationers will be looking for culinary adventures as well. Increasingly, travelers of all ages have become discerning foodies, and fortunately Ocean City’s food and beverage scene has grown to accommodate their palates and Instagram feeds

New venues to consider promoting include:

For committed foodies, the OC Foodie Tour provides a 3.5 hour walk through Ocean City dining past and present, with samplings at five locally owned restaurants. The July Greek festival treats travelers to local dolmathes, keftedes, spanakopita and more. And Fall Restaurant Week offers fixed-price menus for the range of budgets and palates.

4. Reliability and consistency

In a world full of apps, texts and tech gadgets, customer service matters more than ever—especially in the vacation rental industry.

“Booking a vacation rental is more of a ‘considered purchase’ than booking a hotel room,” in the words of a report recapping this year’s VRMA Conference.

So don’t forget the basics, like giving customers what they expect in terms of quality, amenities and service as they book a vacation home year after year.

This can mean:

  • Dependable upkeep with prompt, effective repairs
  • Consistent (and well-functioning) conveniences such as key-based entry and digital thermostats
  • Perks guests can look forward to stay after stay, such as free gym passes, mid-week cleanings and grocery delivery services

Guests book a vacation rental to decrease—not add to—the stress in their lives. They want to know what to expect as they book a reservation, settle in, enjoy the amenities and wrap up their trips.

It’s important that you never forget the human element: the people making your guests feel at home. Make sure you choose a property management partner that consistently wows vacationing guests with great customer service, which hospitality consultant Debby Hudspith defines as: “Knowing why the customer is there in the first place, making them feel important, building a relationship, responding to requests out of the ordinary and ensuring someone is always available for them, no matter which department.”

5. Value for the vacation dollar

As more and more travelers vacation in large groups, they’re discovering that splitting the cost of a vacation home is a great way to get extra space at an affordable price. Remember that California wine estate mentioned earlier? The rental cost, averaged out across 10 people, comes down to $68 per person per night—far less expensive than most hotels in the area could offer.

In our opinion, typical renters aren’t always on a quest for luxury at the very highest end. They’re on a quest for value. And owners of all sizes and types of properties—from condo rentals to beach home rentals—can fulfill this quest by giving their guests a little extra bang for their buck. For property owners in Ocean City, Maryland, this includes not only space to relax but upgraded amenities and complimentary treats.

Need inspiration? Successful Meetings highlighted:

  • Record players, with music guests can “check out” from a vinyl library
  • A live goldfish as the official property pet
  • Cocktail packages delivered by a personal bartender

Special skincare products, linens and robes have been a rising trend in the hospitality industry overall—especially when they come with a unique story or local hook. But you don’t have to break the bank to make your guests feel special.

Consider providing them with practical perks like blenders and coffeemakers, water bowls and treat baskets for pet owners, or bottled water and energy bars for sports and outdoor enthusiasts. Or try homey treats like fruit baskets, plates of cookies, or homemade soups and breads.

6. A shift to direct bookings

At the VRMA International Conference, which explored the rental market for 2019, several managers of large properties reported a decreased, even eliminated, reliance on online travel agencies (OTAs). Customer service and ability to communicate with guests throughout the booking process were big reasons. And if vacation rental property managers are feeling this difference, you can bet that guests, are, too.

So as the new year begins, remember that you as a local owner of a vacation home can offer many advantages that a global OTA or customer service rep in a faraway call center cannot. This includes things like:

  • Who to contact for a spur-of-the-moment crab fest—or a last-minute registration for the holiday fun run
  • What parks and beaches are most kid-friendly—and what nightclubs have lined up the hottest new DJs
  • What local shops have the best deals on beachwear—or the best under-the-radar happy hours on the boardwalk
  • When to see the wild horses at Assateague Island National Seashore—or to take to the seas for the best white marlin
  • How to catch crabs in the bay—or spot the most elusive gulls and loons during a bird watching hike

And as more travel and hospitality trends emerge for Ocean City, Maryland, vacation homes in 2019, you can be sure that Vantage will be there on the forefront, ready to help you delight your guests and position your properties for success.
