Family Vacation

How to Plan the Perfect Family Vacation in Ocean City, MD

Ocean City Boardwalk Downtown
Ocean City, MD’s famous downtown Boardwalk area

You look forward to it all year long. You save up for it. And you dream about a summer beach vacation that is nothing but fun and relaxation. So, what can you do to make sure your vacation meets or exceeds everyone’s expectations. In a word, planning.

A little planning goes a long way when it comes to the family vacation in Ocean City, MD. Planning helps to keep stress at bay and drama to a minimum. At Vantage, we know a lot about planning happy vacations. Our team has put together some expert tips to help you get the most from your trip to the beach.

Be mindful of the dates

Ocean City, MD, is a hub of activity all summer long, attracting families from across the Mid-Atlantic region. There are some weeks that are especially popular, including the week after high school graduation, around the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Convention in mid-June and the days surrounding the 4th of July holiday. You may want to plan your trip for or around events like these, depending on your preferences for crowds.

Create an itinerary (but stay flexible)

Amusement Rides Ocean City
Decide which activities are on your family’s bucket list

“What are we going to do today?” It’s an innocent enough question, but if you don’t have answers, or if everyone in your crew insists on doing their own favorite activity, you can end up wasting too much of your precious vacation time.

Before you even pack up the car, call an official family meeting. Ask everyone for ideas about what they want to see and do, like walking the Boardwalk, renting bicycles, spending a day at Jolly Roger amusements, fishing and crabbing off the pier and visiting the shops along Coastal Highway. You can even do a little research before your family meeting to learn about any new attractions and activities.

Once you have your list of options, rough out a daily schedule so everyone can see their ideas represented. You’re certainly free to change and adapt as your week plays out, but this way you will at least have a starting point. Here’s a helpful hint: If you plan an activity that could go late into the evening, avoid choosing something too early the following morning. Vacation can be tiring!

Take time for adventure

Wild Ponies of Assateague Island
Plan a day trip to see the wild ponies of Assateague Island

Head off the beaten path. Go outside your comfort zone. Whatever you want to call it, you can make some of the best vacation memories by experiencing the thrill of an expedition and the pursuit of the unknown. (File this under “go exploring” for the itinerary mentioned above.)

If you’ve been to Ocean City before, seek out areas you’ve never seen. Take a day trip over to Assateague Island. Tour the neighborhoods and restaurants in Ocean Pines or West Ocean City. Take some bikes for a cruise along the peaceful bay.

Unplug as much as possible

If you don’t have to check in with work, just leave it behind. (It will be there when you get back.) If your job demands that you check email or call in, try to pick just one or two time periods each day—preferably before or after the times you have set aside for fun activities. And set your email auto-reply so people know you may be a while before getting back to them.

Cook up a meal plan

Family Eating Dinner on Vacation
Whether eating in or dining out, plan your meal strategy

For some, going on vacation means hitting the restaurant circuit for every meal, every day. Others prefer to dine out only occasionally and prepare some meals at their vacation rental home. Wherever you fall in this spectrum, it’s smart to map out your meal strategy in advance.

Figure out first how many times you want to eat out, and for what meals. Then, similar to how you created your itinerary, ask family members if they have any favorite places or “musts” as far as restaurants go. You can whittle the list down from there if necessary.

If you plan to cook some meals, bring some of your ingredients from home if space allows. You may be able to get some items for less by shopping close to home.

Don’t let weather rain on your parade

Old Pro Golf Ocean City MD
Old Pro Golf’s indoor mini-golf is great for a rainy day

It’s summertime in Ocean City, MD. The weather can be predictably unpredictable. A sunny morning can quickly turn into a downpour. That won’t dampen your spirits if you prepare ahead of time with a list of rainy-day activities. Take a trip to the movies at one of Ocean City’s several theaters. See what’s weird and wild at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! on the Boardwalk. Play a friendly game of indoor putt-putt at Old Pro Golf. Or put your puzzle-solving skills to the test at the Escapomania escape room. For some good old-fashioned family fun, break out a favorite boardgame and snacks.

Choose the right accommodations

This. Above all else, this. You inevitably spend lots of hours together “back at the place.” (See above about rainy days.) If that place isn’t comfortable, if it’s too crowded, if it’s not properly maintained, if it’s too far from everything, your harmonious together time could be in serious jeopardy.

Beach Wedding Ocean City

Plan a Magical Beach Wedding in Ocean City, MD

Beach Wedding Couple Ocean City
Ocean City, MD, is a romantic place to tie the knot

The sound of the waves, the sun on the horizon, the smell of the salt and feeling of the sand—there are few locales more romantic and appropriate for a wedding than the beach. And Ocean City, MD, makes for a perfect destination wedding for you, your family and your closest friends.

Here are the top tips to plan a beach wedding to remember in Ocean City, Maryland.

Plan well in advance

Every ceremony requires plenty of prep, and that’s especially true for a destination wedding in a popular location like Ocean City, MD. Couples from all over the East Coast flock to Ocean City to tie the knot.

The first thing you’ll need to consider when planning your Ocean City wedding is the timing: Are there any special events, which could draw big crowds and interfere with your plans?

Planning a Beach Wedding
Start by contacting the Town of Ocean City

Then you’ll want to apply for a local marriage license. Contact Worchester County Clerk of Court Office at 410-632-5500 to make sure you know what documents you’ll need to bring. You should discuss your plans with the Ocean City Mayor’s Office (410-289-8931).

Be sure you also have an officiant ready to go: Ocean City, MD, has no Justice of the Peace to oversee your ceremony. Once you have all of your plans set, you must also notify the city.

You may also want to attend the annual Ocean City Bridal Show (held at Seacrets!) to meet with local vendors and professionals who can help you navigate the process of planning a beach wedding. This year’s event will be April 7, 2019 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Decide on a location—public, private or resort-style

Beach Wedding Venue Ocean City
Beach Wedding Venue Ocean City

Once you have the red tape out of the way, your first big question is where are you going to hold your ceremony and reception? A public beach might be the most affordable option, but that means anyone can crash your wedding photos. You might be able to reserve sections for yourself, however, so check with the Ocean City Mayor’s Office.

A private beach offers a perfect amount of seclusion, and a restaurant or hotel right near or even on the beach can provide views of the ocean plus a reception venue—but at a higher cost than if you say, “I do” on a public beach.

Enjoy the sunrise (or sunset)

During peak season, it’s going to be hot in the afternoon, so consider a morning or sunset ceremony for a cooler alternative. Your guests—especially the older and younger ones—will be thankful. Your photos will likely come out better, too, as everyone will be glistening less.

Besides, nothing’s more romantic than the sun rising or setting as you enjoy your first kiss as a newlywed couple.

Choose appropriate attire

You want to be comfortable when you’re strolling down the sandy aisle, so opt for lightweight fabric and leave behind the cumbersome (and hot) ball gown. Likewise, the groom and members of the wedding party should don lighter than usual colors and material—linen and cotton make for good options. Groomsmen could even opt out of sport jackets for a more casual look that matches the locale—so no black tuxes.

It could also get windy, so consider leaving behind the lengthy veil. And avoid heels so you don’t sink into the sand: Instead, wear flat sandals or wedges—or go barefoot to feel the sand between your toes for the full beach wedding experience.

Make waves with a sound system

You’re going to spend hours perfecting your vows and the rest of the ceremony, so make sure all of your guests can hear them. The waves of Ocean City, MD, will be loud, and you don’t want them to drown out your proclamations of love. Look into renting a sound system to amplify your pronouncements—especially if you’re filming the proceedings.

Mind your meals

From the hors d’oeuvres to mains and dessert, you’re going to want to put some thought into what you serve at your reception. Outdoor dining on the water demands lighter foods, and you’ll want to keep all cheeses and cream-based items out of the sun. Make sure you serve plenty of water in addition to the champagne so your guests stay hydrated, and choose bubbly wines that will feel refreshing.

Finally, the cake—no wedding is complete without it. Consult with your baker about what fillings and other ingredients will work best under the sun—often, fondant is a better choice than buttercream, and red velvet will do well.

Make sure your flowers can handle the heat

Not all blooms are meant for the high heat and humidity of Ocean City, Maryland, during the summer. When you’re planning your dream beach wedding, you’ll want to keep in mind what’s in the bridal bouquet and what varieties the flower girl will be traipsing down the aisle with. Select ones that do well in tropical weather: orchids, chrysanthemums, plumeria, calla lilies and king protea are all good choices.

Welcome to Ocean City Water Tower

Which Ocean City Neighborhood Are You?

Thrasher’s French Fries on the Boardwalk

From the beach to the bay to the Boardwalk and beyond, Ocean City, MD, offers countless activities and attractions that appeal to a range of ages, tastes and lifestyles. Does your ideal day come with some Thrasher’s French Fries, a ride on the go-carts and shopping for a t-shirt or two? Or would you rather play a round of golf and grab some local seafood while watching the sunset? Vacationers come to Ocean City year after year because there’s something for everyone.

And since every neighborhood has a distinct feel, your experience depends largely on where you stay: Boardwalk/Downtown, Mid-Town or North Ocean City. Before you book your Ocean City rental, decide which location offers exactly what you’re looking for in a vacation.

Get Lost in the Excitement Near the Ocean City Boardwalk/Downtown (Inlet – 30th Street)

Ocean City was a sleepy fishing village until the Bay Bridge brought an influx of vacationers in the 1950s. Ocean City Downtown has retained a lot of the “old Ocean City” character, with ornate Victorian homes, plus charming restaurants and shops. Ocean City’s iconic Boardwalk, built in 1902, stretches from the inlet north to 27th Street, lined with many tourist attractions like souvenir shops, games, tasty treats and Trimper’s rides. Visitors who love Maryland Boardwalk condo rentals enjoy being in the middle of the hustle and bustle.

Belmont Towers 601 Balcony
Belmont Towers 601 on the Boardwalk

Note: The Ocean City Boardwalk draws crowds, so parking can be difficult—especially during large events like Sunfest or Cruisin’ OC. For a more convenient way to get around, take the Ocean City Beach Bus, which you can ride all day for $3. The system accepts EMoney, and you can keep track of arrivals with a handy app. The Boardwalk Tram is another option, although prices vary.

Some of Vantage’s popular vacation rentals in the Downtown area include properties in:

Harbor Breeze is another popular destination right in the action of the Ocean City Boardwalk—perfectly suited for a getaway with a group of friends.

Meet in the Middle at Mid-Town (31st – 93rd Street)

Outdoor dining area at Fager’s Island

Mid-Town Ocean City offers the best of both worlds: It’s an ideal option if you want to be close to the excitement of the Boardwalk but also just secluded enough to be on the quieter side.

Mid-Town’s character changes as you head further north, starting with smaller homes and progressing to more high rises. No matter what you’re looking for—mini-golf, a frozen drink, a water park, suntan lotion—you’ll probably find it within a five-minute walk of where you’re staying in Mid-Town. You can even catch a concert at the new Ocean City Performing Arts Center.

Large Group Family Vacations

How to Plan an Easy Large Group Vacation

Get the Whole Gang Together Stress-Free

Travel planning takes lots of coordination and flexibility—especially when your group spans multiple generations. With our advice, everyone from your kids to grandma to your second cousin once-removed can experience a stress-free Ocean City vacation.

Plan your itinerary together—and write it all down

It’s bound to happen in large groups, especially with lots of kids, teens and tweens in the mix. Some will want to ride go-carts or hit the waterslide while others want to play mini-golf or do some shopping. (Adults can have their own preferences, too!)

Taking the time to create an itinerary together early in your stay will help to ensure that all involved get a chance to do something they want. Sure, there will be compromises, but all parties will be well-aware beforehand. And knowing their activity is part of the plan should make younger family members more willing participants.

Plan outings suited for large groups

Assateague Island National Park

It just takes a little digging to find destinations that will interest (almost) every family member. Surely there is something that’s new and surprising to everyone at Ocean City’s Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum. Tanger Outlets has enough stores and restaurants to appease double-digit families. And the horses of Assateague Island National Park are sure to captivate your whole crew. Wherever you go, remember to allow some extra time. Getting large groups ready and out the door can be a challenge.

Go your own way

When vacationing with extended family members or multiple families, you may feel pressured to do everything as one large group, from morning to night. But some separation can make vacation memories sweeter. Make sure everyone understands at the beginning of the trip that it’s perfectly acceptable to break off into smaller groups for activities and meals. If you and another family have children, consider taking turns doing things with all the kids and giving the other grownups some alone time. You’ll all end up at the same place at the end of the day, and you’ll definitely have plenty of time to spend together.

Expect the unexpected—and roll with it

All the planning in the world can’t account for bad weather, a closed attraction or a kid with a cold. Being flexible, especially with the youngest and oldest members of the group, will ease tension on your vacation. Adapting to changing situations will also help the family stay in the present moment, rather than lamenting what may have been missed or rushing toward the next thing. Going back to the itinerary idea, you may want to prepare a special list of things to do on rainy days or extremely hot days.

Choose a property with amenities that make life easier

Living room of St. Kitts 403

When vacationing with a large group, opting for space is one of the smartest things you can do. Make sure there are enough bedrooms, extra bathrooms, a comfortable living space where everyone can sit—or even multiple living spaces—and a designated area for kids to play by themselves.

Don’t underestimate the conveniences of home, either. Especially for an extended stay, having a fully-equipped kitchen, a washer/dryer, central air conditioning, Wi-Fi access and TVs will ensure everyone has their own space and comforts—and a stress-free time.

Determine a budget that works for the whole family

Before the trip planning process even begins, you need to talk budget. Vacationing in volume means some family members might be able to open their wallets wider than others. Determining—at least roughly—the amount you’ll spend when embarking on activities together will alleviate the stress of feeling pressured or having to make big choices in the middle of your getaway.

Share meal responsibilities

With a fully stocked kitchen, you may not want to eat out for every meal. To avoid breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner prep falling on one family member, plan to share the cooking. You can divide by days or particular types of meal. Having everyone chip in for pizza or crabs is always a winner.

Ask older kids to babysit

Evening out with friends

Just because you’re on a family vacation doesn’t mean you can’t have an evening away. If the kids in your group are a variety of ages, have the teenagers babysit! In addition to allowing you a nice, quiet adult meal, the kids—perhaps cousins who don’t see each other often—can make a night of it, too, with popcorn and a movie.

Top 5 Reasons Why Vacation Rentals Are Better than Hotels

When it comes time to plan your Ocean City getaway, you may face a common travel conundrum: vacation rentals vs. hotels. Actually, the choice may be easier than you think, especially when you factor in advantages like cost and the square footage available in a vacation home rental.

To help you make a decision you’ll feel good about, we’ve put together the top five reasons why vacation rentals are the better choice for your stay in Ocean City.

Benefit #1 of a Vacation Rental vs a Hotel: Rentals are more cost effective.

Sunset Island 14 Shore Point Dr.
Sunset Island 14 Shore Point Dr.

When you book a vacation rental directly through a property management company, there are no hidden fees or costs that get tacked on during your stay. You’ll know what’s included from the beginning, and the price doesn’t change.

Planning a vacation with multiple families? Stay in a private home that accommodates more people, then save money by splitting the cost. Expenses can become overwhelming at a hotel where you’d need to book multiple rooms for all your guests.

The number one expense when you’re on vacation: daily meals. At short-term rental homes, kitchen and dining areas give you the freedom to cook meals instead of visiting restaurants three times a day in Ocean City, saving you ample money and time.

Benefit #2 of a Vacation Rental vs a Hotel: Rentals are more flexible.

The perfect vacation doesn’t include timed schedules. Book a vacation home and sleep when you want, take your time eating meals, go for a midnight swim—you operate on your time. On the other hand, staying in a traditional hotel means you run the risk of room service interrupting your nap, waiting in line for continental breakfast and missing out on restricted pool hours—to name a few inconveniences.

And while most hotels offer costs per night, vacation rentals in Ocean City have more flexibility with your length of stay, whether it’s a few nights, a week or longer.

Benefit #3 of a Vacation Rental vs a Hotel: Rentals offer more space.

Gateway Grand 213

The average size of a vacation rental is 2,000 square feet. A hotel room? More like 400 square feet. Not ideal.

Keep your family vacation stress-free at a rental property where you can enjoy time together but retreat to your own space when you need some privacy. (Did we mention no fighting over the bathroom?)

Benefit #4 of a Vacation Rental vs a Hotel: Rentals give you more for your money.

Today’s travelers have certain expectations and preferences for amenities. Among those frequently on the wish list:

• Fast (free) Wi-Fi connections
• Kitchens
• Hot tubs, pool and game tables
• Free parking

Sound good to you? Clearly, all these amenities are much more common in vacation rentals than hotels.

Perks like washing machines and coffee makers help you feel more at home during your stay and often come standard in vacation rental properties. Hotels, however, often charge extra for things like Internet connectivity and movie players.

Benefit #5 of a Vacation Rental vs a Hotel: Rentals offer peace and privacy.

Top View 2N

Even if you book a rental beachfront property in Ocean City, you’re likely to have more breathing room than travelers who opt for hotels. Spare yourself from noisy guests across the hall in a busy hotel and stay in a rental property where you’re free to get a little noisy yourself.

Whether you’re interested in a lazy getaway or an exciting family vacation, make the easy choice to book a rental property—the perfect balance of seclusion and activity.

The team at Vantage is standing by now to help you find an Ocean City rental property that delivers all these benefits and more. Call one of our friendly reservationists at (410) 723-2002 or book direct at www.VantageOceanCity.com.
